Americans?have purchased?almost 17 million guns so far in 2020, more than in any other single full year on record, according to Small Arms Analytics & Forecasting, a research firm that tracks firearms.
In previous election years, sales spikes were believed to be?driven almost entirely by longtime gun owners who worried that a Democratic president might impose new restrictions on firearms.
This time, the sales appear to be driven by fears of societal instability, and gun shop owners and trade groups say the customer base is much broader, including large numbers of Black Americans, women and people who identify as politically liberal.
“People are uneasy,” said Jay Winton, who works at Roney’s Santa Fe shop, the Outdoorsman, which is out of stock of many varieties of weapons and ammunition, as well as accessories such as gun safes.
“They’re concerned about the long-term path of the country,” he said. “And just like they were hoarding toilet paper, they’re hoarding guns and ammo.”
Banks, shops, restaurants and offices in the streets surrounding the White House are playing it safe as police stock up on tear gas, expecting unrest whether Donald Trump or Joe Biden wins.
The George Washington University in DC has also informed students that are on campus to prepare for "a hurricane or blizzard" when prepping for any post-election violence.?
"Be Alert, Be Aware, and Be Prepared," the university's Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities told its students.

Coronavirus?cases continued their grim climb in the United States on Sunday with Midwestern states experiencing record hospitalizations, as increasingly bitter rhetoric kept the virus front and center of campaigning two days before the presidential election.
Nearly 87,000 cases were reported on Saturday, with 909 deaths and record hospitalizations for the sixth straight day in the Midwest, according to a Reuter?tally. In October, 31 states set records for increases in new cases, 21 for hospitalized COVID-19 patients and 14 for record increases in deaths.??
President Donald Trump, the Republican seeking re-election against Democratic challenger Joe Biden on Tuesday, has downplayed the virus and accused Democrats of overblowing the pandemic that has killed more 230,000 Americans, more than any other country.
