1. as luck would have it

▲菲爾過幾天要出席南加州房產(chǎn)經(jīng)紀人銷售年會,以往的主持人因故不能出席,這次由菲爾代為主持。

as luck would have it和by?chance意思差不多,表示“碰巧”,前者更多譯為“幸好”。

We?ran?out of?petrol?on the way?home, but as luck would have it, we were very near a?garage.
我們在回家的路上汽油用光了,幸好當時離加油站不遠。

2. butterflies

這里菲爾想說自己有點緊張,他用到了butterfly,是因為有個習語是have butterflies (in?your?stomach),通常指對將要做的事感到非常緊張,覺得很心慌。

I had?terrible?butterflies?before I gave that?talk?in Venice.
我那次在威尼斯講話前感到異常緊張。

表示“緊張”還可以用nervous;keyed up:;jittery等等這些詞。

3. hit it off

▲其實對宴會上的人,杰一個人都不認識。但是他為了挽回面子,故意表現(xiàn)出跟別人很熟。

hit it off的意思是“(與某人)相處得好,合得來”。

Jake and Sue hit it off?immediately.
杰克和蘇一見如故。

4. grateful?

You should know that every day, I wake up very grateful to have you in my life.
你要知道我每天醒來,都因為我的生命中有你而心懷感激。

因某事而對某人感激就是be grateful to sb for sth。

She was grateful to him for being so good to her.
她很感激他對她這么好。

5. pick up the tab

▲杰以老板的身份主動上臺發(fā)言,豪爽的為當天的宴席買單。

tab通常是標簽,這里指的是帳單,pick up the tab在美國口語里表示“承擔…的費用;為眾人付賬”。
