On November 8, 1793 - The Louvre opens as a museum in Paris.
November 8th, 1793, the Louvre opens as a museum in Paris. Originally constructed as a fortress in 1200 King Phillipe Auguste, the Louvre endured many structural changes before becoming a Grande Musee d'Art following the French Revolution. Known for its vast collection of master works, it stood firm and unchanged alongside other classic monuments, structures and institutions as a must-see for anyone visiting Paris. In the 1980's, under an ambitious plan to revamp the Louvre into the world's largest museum, a modernistic glass pyramid, 71 feet tall, was constructed in the courtyard. Traditionalists called it an outrage, but inside the museum, the Mona Lisa still managed to smile.
