Diary of a Nomad流浪者日記

I like to think I wander with a purpose. I study, I work, I teach, I learn—but most importantly, I want to share. Nomad: (definition) A person with no fixed residence who roams about; a wanderer.
Nomad一詞的意思是“居無定所、到處游蕩的人;漫游者,流浪者”。

用手抓飯的樂趣

Fresh, fiery, sour, salty, sugary, buttery, rich, complex—every Indian meal I ate need more than one word to describe it. Every dish had so many flavours that seemed to mesmerize my tongue, one after another, until I was forced to order more. Needless to say, I gained a little weight while being seduced by the culinary delights of India.

Eating Indian food is a skill, and in the beginning I failed miserably. Many Indians don't use any silverware, and instead mix and eat their dinner with their right hand. (However, I am left hand-ed and received many curious looks while eating with my left hand!) The rice and curry is mixed and then scooped into the mouth with a flicking motion of the thumb. It can also be eaten by picking the rice and curry up with a piece of flat, round bread.

I had many conversations with my Indian friends about why they continue to avoid silverware. Most of them agreed that the food simply tastes better and is more satisfying when it goes directly from your hand to your mouth…without the "middleman".

例:He stood by the lake, mesmerized by the flashing colors of the fish.他站在河邊,被閃爍著各種色彩的魚迷惑住了。

2. needless to say 不用說

這個句型表示:It is so obvious that it doesn't need to be said, but... 也就是“還用說嗎,of course / naturally(當(dāng)然)”的意味。

例:Needless to say, it's difficult to do manual labor on an empty stomach. 不用說,空著肚子勞動是很難的。

3. gain weight 體重增加,長胖了。也可以說 put on weight,相反“減輕體重,瘦身”是lose weight。

雖然目前在許多正式場合,印度人已經(jīng)開始用刀叉吃飯,但在私底下,他們?nèi)匀涣?xí)慣用手抓飯吃。“手抓飯”是印度人長久以來的就餐習(xí)俗,吃飯前他們會先洗凈手,然后準(zhǔn)備就餐。如果去印度人家里做客,一定要嘗試“手抓飯”的樂趣。也正因為這一習(xí)慣,使得印度大部分菜都被做成糊狀,這樣才便于用手抓餅卷著吃,或是抓米飯拌著吃。

印度人認(rèn)為吃飯中很多快感來自觸覺,刀叉和筷子阻止了這種感覺,所以也就阻卻了特有的快感。更重要的是,用手抓飯可以提前了解食物的溫度,避免燙著舌頭或者口腔。印度人抓飯時大多只用3個手指,那就是拇指、食指和中指。他們先用這3個手指伸直按在面餅邊緣,成三股叉狀,然后中指使力成彎曲狀,壓住餅子不動,拇指和食指一齊用力撕下一小塊面餅,接著三根手指協(xié)同作戰(zhàn),用餅子將菜包住,就像吃北京烤鴨那樣,最后捏住送入口中。

印度人的主食除了面餅,還有米飯。吃米飯時,先用那三根手指將米飯和各種菜湯均勻攪拌,就像攪拌機攪拌水泥一樣,然后撮起一小堆,送入口中。有的人手指不是很麻利,于是便五根手指一齊上陣。米飯吃完之后,將沾滿油膩的指頭逐個放入口中吮吸,徹底舔干凈之后才算罷手。

印度人吃飯還有一個規(guī)矩,無論大人還是孩子,一定要用右手吃飯,給別人遞食物、餐具,更得用右手。這是因為人們認(rèn)為右手干凈,左手臟。在餐館或印度人家里吃飯,當(dāng)快吃完的時候,主人往往會給每人端上一小碗溫水,上面還漂著一塊檸檬。這水可千萬不能喝,它是用來洗手的。

也許有人覺得印度人吃相不雅,但更應(yīng)該理解。這和使用筷子、刀叉吃飯一樣,只是一種習(xí)慣,根本沒有雅俗之分。
