German Chancellor Angela Merkel is coming under fire for her declaration that Germany's efforts to build a multicultural society are a failure.

Her statement is feeding a growing debate over how to deal with the millions of immigrants who call the country home.

Merkel was speaking on Saturday to a meeting of the youth wing of her Christian Democratic Union party.

She says the multicultural approach that envisions different people living happily side by side has failed.

Merkel's comments were met with applause by the more conservative members of her party, but some Germans in cosmopolitan Berlin argued Sunday she was out of touch with the country's daily life.

Kenan Kolat, Head of Turkisn Community in Germany, said, "We have to do everything in Germany to get a common feeling of 'us.' Right now we have a culture of 'us and them.' This is very dangerous and leads to positions like that seen from Thilo Sarrazin. These right wing tendencies in Germany have to worry us and the chancellor as well."

Germany and other European countries have grappled with the idea of themselves as immigration nations. Merkel has long been sceptical of the country's attempts to build a multicultural society.

Many immigrants speak little or no German, work in low paying jobs or live off government handouts as the country faced an aging population and a shortage of highly skilled workers.
