President Barack Obama is hailing the seventh straight month of job creation in the private sector. But he says progress needs to come faster. Companies still lack confidence in hiring with the unemployment rate stuck at 9.5%.

BP says it will have to think about drilling in the oil reservoir that blew its top, flooding in the Gulf of Mexico with oil. The company says it will abandon the blown well and relief wells, but maybe drill nearby.

A sudden downpour and flash floods sweep away houses in India, killing at least 103 people in Kashmir. Hundreds more are injured with police pulling survivors from knee-deep mud and rubble.

A submarine from the Civil War preserved at an angle for years is about to be turned, letting scientists see more of the vessel’s bottom. The H.L. Hunley sank in 1864 and today rests in South Carolina.
