An administration official says testing will continue as BP and the government disagree over whether the new cap on the well should be removed. BP wants to keep the cap while administration officials say that cap should be removed. They guess methane may have been detected near the blown-out well.
A man, polices say, who was armed and wearing a bulletproof vest remains hospitalized after a traffic stop turned into a shootout in Oakland. Officers say the driver started shooting shortly after being pulled over. Authorities returned fire, hitting the suspect several times. Two officers suffered minor injuries.
Secretary of State Hilary Clinton has opened high-level talks with Pakistan by announcing several new aid projects. Clinton says the project soaring effort by the U.S. to convince Pakistanis that Washington is focused on more than just backing that country’s fight against Taliban and al-Qaeda militants.
Indian officials are investigating the possibility of foul play in the deadly collision of two trains in eastern India. The crash killed at least 61 people, the force of the crash threw the roof of one car onto an overpass. The disaster was the second major deadly train crash in India in the past two months.
