This Day in History - July 25th Starring - The Andrea Dorrie

One hour before midnight on July 25, 1956, the Swedish ocean liner Stockholm sliced through the fog off Nantucket and collided with the Italian Ocean liner Andrea Doria. While the Andrea Doria listed badly, several ships were able to respond to her S.O.S. and stage an all out rescuing. Stockholm's bow was crumbled, but the Swedish ship managed to struggle to port with the help of Coast Guard surveillance" class="hjdict" word="surveillance" target=_blank>surveillance. Both ships were fully equipped with radar and authorities were puzzled as to the cause of an accident that left 52 people dead or missing. Twelve hours after the collision, the Andrea Doria foundered and was finally swallowed up for good by the New England coastal waters.?
