June 29, 1941

June 29, 1941, scarcely more than a week after initiating a massive surprise assault on Russia, Nazi Panzer divisions were reported to have made staggering advances toward Leningrad, Moscow and Kiev. With a 2,000 mile front spanning the Arctic region and the Black Sea, some 250 divisions composed of Germans, Hungarians, and Finns constituted the most powerful army the world had ever seen. Evidently, Joseph Stalin had ignored warnings that Hitler would betray the 1939 Nazi-Soviet non-aggression pact, as his Red Army appeared woefully ill-prepared. However, the Red Army numbered more than 7 million, the largest on Earth and the tenacity of Russia's populace and the severity of its winter had yet to be felt by the Germans.
