“Little tyke,” chortled Mr. Dursley as he left the house. He got into his car and backed out of number four's drive.

It was on the corner of the street that he noticed the first sign of something peculiar — a cat reading a map. For a second, Mr. Dursley didn't realize what he had seen — then he jerked his head around to look again. There was a tabby cat standing on the corner of Privet Drive, but there wasn't a map in sight. What could he have been thinking of? It must have been a trick of the light. Mr. Dursley blink and stared at the cat. It stared back. As Mr. Dursley drove around the corner and up the road, he watched the cat in his mirror. It was now reading the sign that said Privet Drive — no, looking at the sign; cats couldn't read maps or signs. Mr. Dursley gave himself a little shake and put the cat out of his mind. As he drove toward town he thought of nothing except a large order of drills he was hoping to get that day.

主要知識(shí)點(diǎn)：

1.?on the corner of (the street):

這里主要是講on這個(gè)介詞。我們經(jīng)常碰到和corner有關(guān)的詞組是on the corner以及in the corner，這兩者有什么區(qū)別呢？
on the corner表示在拐角（外面）上，就像是街道馬路的拐角一樣。
in the corner表示在某一范圍內(nèi)角落 ，就比如說(shuō)房間的某個(gè)角落。
因此，如果我們說(shuō)“一個(gè)人站在街角”，就是：He's standing on the corner of the street.
而要表達(dá)“一個(gè)人站在房間的一角”，則是：He's standing in the corner of the room.

2. jerk one's head around：

jerk表示cause sth/sb to move with a short sudden action or a series of short uneven actions（使某物/某人）猛然一動(dòng)或顫動(dòng)。比如說(shuō)：He jerked his head towards the door.（他猛然把頭扭向大門。）
因此文中的“jerked his head around”可以說(shuō)是非常形象地表現(xiàn)了杜斯利大叔那種緊張啊~

3. a trick of:

trick這個(gè)詞有很多意思，諸如“詭計(jì)”，“技巧”等，在這里，表示“把戲，魔術(shù)手法”，比如說(shuō)：
Let me show you some card tricks.（我來(lái)給你表演一些紙牌戲法。）

4. put sth out of one's mind:

這個(gè)詞組是“不再想，有意忘記”的意思。
He tried to put all this out of his mind. （他設(shè)法不想這一切。）
而put sb in mind of sb/sth就是“使某人想起……”的意思啦。
