Marika Holland researching possible tipping point for Arctic sea ice

Marika Holland: If you lose sea ice it leads to more warming, which leads to more sea ice loss, which leads to more warming. So there’s this vicious cycle that sets up when you start losing sea ice cover.
瑪麗卡?霍蘭德：如果海冰消融，全球氣候就會變暖，氣候變暖反過來也會使海冰消融。所以當海冰開始消融時，地球環(huán)境就進入一個惡性循環(huán)。
You’re listening to Marika Holland, a scientist at the National Center for Atmospheric Research. She and other scientists are researching whether there might be a ‘tipping point’ for Arctic sea ice – a point at which sea ice will disappear and never recover, even if the climate cools. So far though she hasn’t found evidence for that tipping point.
今天節(jié)目組采訪了美國國家大氣研究中心科學(xué)家瑪麗卡?霍蘭德。她與同事致力于研究對于北冰洋上的海冰是否存在一個不可逆轉(zhuǎn)的“消融點”，一旦達到該點即使氣候轉(zhuǎn)涼海冰也無法恢復(fù)原來的覆蓋量。目前為止，她還沒有找到該點存在的證據(jù)。
Marika Holland: So there’s been a lot of speculation from some scientists that we could have already passed a tipping point, or be close to a tipping point. And I’m trying to investigate this using climate models.
瑪麗卡?霍蘭德：一些科學(xué)家就此進行了種種推測，他們認為實際上海冰的消融已經(jīng)達到了不可逆轉(zhuǎn)的程度，或者與之非常接近。而我所做的就是采用氣候模型對此進行調(diào)查。
Holland’s models look at the physical response of sea ice to different levels of greenhouse gas emissions.

Marika Holland: We’re still on this path of decreasing sea ice cover, but if things were stabilized in terms of greenhouse gas concentrations, we might be able to stabilize the sea ice cover as well.
瑪麗卡?霍蘭德：目前海冰仍在日益消融，但假如溫室氣體排放量能夠穩(wěn)定下來，也許海冰的覆蓋面也將維持穩(wěn)定。
In other words, Holland’s research suggests that summertime sea ice – which is predicted to disappear by mid-century – could possibly recover to its previous extent and thickness.
換句話說，霍蘭德的研究表明，原本預(yù)計本世紀中期完全消失的夏季海冰有可能恢復(fù)原來的覆蓋面和厚度。
Marika Holland: I think it’s a strong suggestion that reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, fossil fuel burning can actually have an impact on Arctic sea ice cover, that not all hope is lost.
瑪麗卡?霍蘭德：我覺得這充分說明了，減少溫室氣體排放量和化石燃料燃燒確能阻止北冰洋海冰消融，我們?nèi)匀淮嬗幸痪€希望。
