Recently, dogs in Sydney got a chance to hear a concert.

American experimental performance artist and musician Laurie Anderson gave a debut performance of her original "Music for Dogs" composition outside the Sydney Opera House on June 5th.

Many excited dog owners took their pets to hear the performance.

"He quite likes jazz actually, yeah jazz."

"We think this one might be into classical."

"My dog is German, and she prefers German composers. She loves classical music, but primarily German classical music."

Anderson's 20-minute performance entertained the dogs with thumping beats, whale calls, whistles and a few high-pitched electronic sounds imperceptible to human ears.

Anderson told reporters how she got the idea to hold such a concert.

"We thought wouldn't it be great if you're playing a concert, and you look out and everyone's a dog. And so I thought if I ever get a chance to do that, I'm going to do it. And today was it. So this is like a highlight of my life. Plus, you know, the dogs are really wonderful audience members. They're grooving, they're like ‘whooo.' You know, a lot of them are singing and dancing, and they're uninhibited."

The concert was originally made for dogs' ears only, but Anderson changed her mind to let people have some fun, too.

"We didn't want to do something that humans couldn't hear too. So we chose a bunch of different sounds and things. I think a lot of dogs seem to enjoy actually classical music, frankly. We had some rockers. We had a bunch of rockers today. But a lot of them are kind of more chilled out. So, we went for, we brought the octaves down into our hearing range so we could all have the experience."

The 63-year-old artist also said the crowd was one of the best-behaved she's ever played for.
