April 14, 1986 - U.S. Air Attacks on Tripoli, Libya.

Ronald Reagan: At seven o'clock this evening Eastern time, air and naval forces of the United States launched a series of strikes against the headquarters, terrorist facilities and military assets that support Muammar Gadaffi's subversive activities.

On April 14, 1986, 18 U.S. F-111 bombers were ordered to strike an airport, military barracks and a port outside Tripoli, Libya. At least 15 were killed in a residential neighborhood in Tripoli. One of the victims was identified as the adopted daughter of Colonel Muammar Gadaffi (some spell it Gadhaffi, Gaddaffi, or Qadhafi). President Reagan claimed he ordered the strike after uncovering evidence of a direct Libyan role in the bombing of a West Berlin discotheque.

Ronald Reagan: Today, we have done what we had to do. If necessary, we shall do it again.
