American computer scientist who jumped from 135,889 feet (41.4km) breaking Felix Baumgartner’s 2012 world record for the highest free fall jump. Following a balloon-powered ascent, his jump to Earth lasted 15 minutes with speeds exceeding 821.45 mph (1,322kmh). His equipment included a life-support system to allow him to breathe pure oxygen in a pressure suit and a drogue parachute.

For the second year running, the amazing McFadden completed the classic marathon Grand Slam, winning in Boston, Chicago, London and New York. On the track she also broke the T54 world records in 1,500 and 5,000 metres. Earlier in the year, she showed her versatility by switching to the Winter Paralympics in Sochi and winning the silver medal in the 1km cross-country sprint.
