Ang Lee has won the award for Best Director at the 85th Academy Awards, for helming the movie "Life of Pi". He beat out Michael Haneke of "Amour," Benh Zeitlin of "Beasts of the Southern Wild," Steven Spielberg of "Lincoln" and David O. Russell of "Silver Linings Playbook" to win the golden statuette.
This time’s award for Best Director is the second Oscar for Lee, who won in 2005 for "Brokeback Mountain." The director from Taiwan was also nominated in 2000 for directing "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." He becomes only the 19th director to win the honor multiple times. "Life of Pi" is Lee’s first 3D movie.
The film was an adaptation of Yann Martel’s fantasy adventure novel about an Indian boy who survives a shipwreck but and stranded in a lifeboat with a Bengal tiger. It earned 11 nominations and grabbed 3 other Oscars, including best visual effects, cinematography and score.
Shot in India, the movie has grossed about 500 million US dollars worldwide up to January.
