That's why many people who reach 30 without finding a husband or wife get stressed.

This situation has made online matchmaking Web sites popular nowadays, when the post-'80s generation spends more time on the Internet. Gong Haiyan, CEO of the online matchmaking site , says the Internet provides a good platform for young people to meet others.

"For Chinese, it's not easy to make acquaintances with strangers, not to mention making a stranger your friend or lover. However, the Internet has provided a perfect way for people to get to know each other, and most single people feel comfortable seeking a companion online."

In China, single people usually do not go to bars or nightclubs to seek dates. However, millions of single men and women have registered at matchmaking sites in order to find love and romance.

Gong Haiyan says this is because only a few people are lucky enough to find their loved ones among their friends and colleagues.

The coming Spring Festival will bring a peak season for these matchmaking sites. They are all rushing to promote their matchmaking events, advertised as a chance to "have a New Year's Eve dinner with your potential lover," and "enjoy your Spring Festival with your future husband or wife." Single men and women can join by paying about 150 yuan.

Gong Haiyan says his site organizes about 1,000 events every year, and recently they have planned more matchmaking events during the spring festival.

"We are organizing many events these days. For example, a matchmaking date at a park in Beijing on February 14th. And on February 19th, we are going to have more events in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou as well as Shenzhen. In addition, we will launch a new site focusing on wedding ceremonies for our members."

Insiders say the various promotions now are just the prelude to the real battle among matchmaking Web sites.
