根據(jù)我國的翻譯實踐，表達"副"的含義用的最廣泛的是Vice 和Deputy。Vice 和Deputy 并無本質(zhì)區(qū)別，在實際使用時究竟選用哪個，純屬搭配習慣。一般來說，vice與president、 premier、 chairman、 minister、 governor 搭配；deputy與director、 chief、head 、secretary、dean、mayor 搭配。似乎可以認為，Vice比Deputy的搭配級別要高。如：

Assistant 也可作"副"解釋，如：副經(jīng)理 Assistant Manager

但我們知道，assistant 原本含義是"助理"。當我們把"副經(jīng)理"譯成assistant manager 時，那么"經(jīng)理助理"怎么譯？另外，assistant manager和另一種副經(jīng)理deputy manager之間有什么區(qū)別？

要弄清以上情況， 先得看看Assistant 和Deputy在美國的用法，以美國聯(lián)邦財政部金融管理局（Financial Management Service）為例，該局局長稱作Commissioner，緊接著Commissioner的二號人物稱 Deputy Commissioner，相當于我們中國的第一副局長，然后是多名分管各個不同科室的副局長，如分管聯(lián)邦金融事務的副局長（Assistant Commissioner, Federal Finance）、分管金融運營事務的副局長（Assistant Commissioner, Financial Operations）、分管政府部門會計事務的副局長(Assistant Commissioner, Governmentwide Accounting)等等

無論是美國政府還是企業(yè)機構幾乎都是一樣，即Deputy 作為第一副職，往往只設一個，而Assistant 卻可以有多個。比如在一家美國公司里，既有Deputy General Manager，又有Assistant General Manager，都可以譯成"副總經(jīng)理"，但其地位是前者（相當于我們的常務副總）高于后者。

至于比“副總經(jīng)理”地位更低的“總經(jīng)理助理”，則可譯為：Assistant to General Manager。如：總經(jīng)理私人助理-Personal Assistant to GM、總經(jīng)理特別助理-Special Assistant to GM。

在我國的行政機構內(nèi)，"助理"往往指的是未經(jīng)過立法機關認可的副職，如“市長助理”，其職責和級別相當于副市長，但地位顯然低一些。這跟英語中的情況是相似的，本來也可套用上述譯法，即將常務副市長、副市長、市長助理分別譯作：Deputy Mayor、Assistant Mayor、Assistant to Mayor。但是，我們已經(jīng)習慣于將“副市長” 統(tǒng)統(tǒng)譯成Deputy Mayor, “市長助理” 譯成Assistant Mayor，而將“常務副市長” 譯成 First Deputy Mayor，此種譯法已廣泛接受，不宜改譯。?
