An activist hedge fund has accused Yahoo's new chief executive Scott Thompson of lying on his CV.

?Mr Thompson claims to hold a bachelor's degree in accounting and computer science from Stonehill College near Boston.
?However, Dan Loeb, the chief executive of hedge fund Third Point, said Mr Thompson "embellished his academic credentials" as his degree is in accounting only.
?"Stonehill College informed us that it did not begin awarding computer science degrees until 1983 - four years after Mr Thompson graduated," Mr Loeb wrote in a letter to the Yahoo! board.
?A Yahoo! spokesman called the discrepancy an "inadvertent error".
?"Scott Thompson received a bachelor of science degree in business administration with a major in accounting from Stonehill college," the spokesman said in a statement. "There was an inadvertent error that stated Mr Thompson also holds a degree in computer science."

?Yahoo! reiterated its confidence in Mr Thompson, saying he is a "highly qualified executive with a successful track record leading large consumer technology companies".

?Third Point's letter is the latest salvo against Yahoo!. The hedge fund, whose 5.8pc stake in Yahoo! ranks it among the tech firm's largest institutional shareholders, has also accused board member Patti Hart, who chaired the chief executive search committee, of embellishing her educational record.

?Various corporate filings state that Ms Hart holds a bachelor's degree in marketing and economics from Illinois State University but her degree is in business administration, Mr Loeb said.
?A Yahoo! spokesman responded: "We can confirm that Patti Hart holds a bachelor of science degree in business administration with specialties in marketing and economics from Illinois State University."
