US coffee giant Starbucks is facing a backlash from Chinese social media users after staff in one of its stores in Chongqing, Southwest China, reportedly drove out local police who were eating food at the doorstep of the store, citing that the latter's behavior could affect the coffee brand's image.

One users said: "The police just borrowed a place to eat, how could it be linked to affecting the image of Starbucks? Now, to the contrary, chasing the police out from the store has seriously affected the image of Starbucks. There are a lot of coffee shops, so we don't have to drink Starbucks."

The police did not leave rubbish un-cleaned while eating and did not cause any negative hygienic impact at the doorstep, but they were yet still asked to leave by Starbucks staff, according to another screenshot circulating online.

The US coffee chain shop currently operates more than 5,400 stores in more than 200 cities in the Chinese mainland, according to its official website.

Starbucks will increase prices this year, the coffee giant said on Tuesday, blaming supply chain disruptions and a sharp rise in labor costs.

For the last three months of last year, the company’s profit soared 31 percent, to $816 million, Starbucks said in reporting its quarterly earnings on Tuesday. Revenue grew to $8.1 billion, a 19 percent jump compared with the same quarter a year ago.

The company raised prices in October 2021 and again in January 2022, executives said on Tuesday, and more increases are coming.

“We anticipate supply chain disruptions will continue for the foreseeable future,” said Kevin Johnson, the president and chief executive of Starbucks. “We have additional pricing actions planned through the balance of this year, which play an important role to mitigate cost pressures including inflation.”

The Wuxi's Market Supervision Administration also said in a statement late on Monday that after conducting investigations on the two stores involved in the incident, it also carried out checks on all 82 Starbuck stories in the city, finding 15 issues in total, including employees not wearing work caps and disinfections records not being complete.

The Beijing News report said one of the Starbucks stores used expired matcha liquid to make lattes, while another had put pastries up for sale that were meant to be thrown away.

The Wuxi Market Supervision Administration handed out a 690,000 yuan fine to one store, while another store was fined 670,000 yuan. The penalty statement was released on the website of the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System (Jiangsu) on Tuesday.
