I spent last week in Brighton interpreting during a training course on waste management. When you're interpreting, you need to make very quick choices to make sure the message is communicated efficiently between all the different participants, so when the debate turned to nimbyism (from NIMBY, Not In My Backyard, which describes opposition by residents to a proposal for a new development close to them), I chose to paraphrase instead of using the English acronym.
上周我在布萊頓為一場關(guān)于污染治理問題的會議做口譯。大會口譯的時候最重要的是在極短的時間內(nèi)斟酌詞語，好讓與會者都明白發(fā)言人的意思。所以當(dāng)發(fā)言者說到nimbyism（由NIMBY而來，Not In My Backyard的縮寫，是對在自己家附近建設(shè)垃圾處理場表示抗議的宣傳語）時，我避開了英文縮寫詞，而是解釋了它的具體含義。

Waste management facilities are rarely welcome and clearly stimulate the imagination of people fighting them: try and see if you can work out what these acronyms mean.
沒人喜歡看到垃圾處理設(shè)備或者場地就在自家門口，所以針對此人們創(chuàng)造出了不少有意思的口號和縮寫：

NIMBY - Not In My Backyard
NIMBY: 后院重地，生人勿入！

NIMSBY - Not In My Second Backyard
NIMSBY：第二后院，也是重地！

NOTE - Not On This Earth
NOTE：我的地盤，我說了算

LULU - Locally Unwanted/Undesirable Land Use
LULU：是非之地，請勿久留

NOOS - Not On Our Street
NOOS：街霸在此，誰敢造次

NOPE - Not On Planet Earth
NOPE: 請回火星

NIABY - Not In Anyone's Backyard
NIABY：每家的后院都是神圣不可侵犯的！

BANANA - Build Absolutely Nothing Anywhere Near Anything
BANANA：建一個拆一個，拆光為止

NIMEY - Not In My Election Year
NIMEY：選舉時節(jié)，保證和諧

NIMFOS - Not In My Field Of Sight
NIMFOS：色即是空空即是色，不要讓我看到不要讓我看到我要清凈……

NIMTOO - Not in My Term of Office
NIMTOO：本官在此，哪個敢放肆？

PITBY- Put It in Their Back Yard
PITBY：要死大家一起死

CALF - Citizens Against Landfill
CALF：統(tǒng)一戰(zhàn)線，抵制垃圾場

PEST - Prevent Environmental Suicide Today
PEST：珍愛生命，拯救環(huán)境
